While the pace of the year seems to have quickened, it’s been accompanied by an abundance of rain and snow. While this precipitation is a welcome relief for California’s ongoing drought concerns, it presents challenges for areas susceptible to flooding and mudslides. Yet, amidst the showers and sunshine, April holds a wealth of history, intriguing facts, and joyous celebrations. let’s check a few out
April holds a rich tapestry of history and lore, woven into the fabric of time by ancient civilizations. Let’s embark on a journey to uncover the secrets and wonders of this captivating month.
Did you know April was the second month of the earliest Roman calendar, before Ianuarius and Februarius were added by King Numa Pompilius about 700 BC. It became the fourth month of the calendar year during the time of the decemvirs about 450 BC, then the month was only 29 days long. The 30th day was added back during the reform of the calendar undertaken by Julius Caesar in the mid-40s BC, which produced the Julian calendar.
In case you were wondering (The decemviri or decemvirs (Latin for “ten men”) refer to official 10-man commissions established by the Roman Republic.)
The English word “April” traces its roots back to the Latin “Aprilis,” its significance shrouded in mystery. Some speculate its association with the Latin verb “aperire,” symbolizing the blooming of nature’s bounty, “to open,” because April “opened” the buds of leaves and flowers.
Others believe April to be named for the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. I think I like that idea better
While federal holidays may be absent, April sparkles with its own array of celebrations. From the lighthearted antics of April Fool’s Day this of course is April 1st to the reverence of Arbor Day which is April 26th. April offers something for everyone.
Dive into Earth Day crafts on April 22, commemorate religious observances like Eid-Al-Fitr (April 9th) and Passover beginning April 22), and tantalize your taste buds with a plethora of national food days, including indulgent treats like National Chocolate Mousse Day (April 3rd) and National Cheese Ball Day (April 17).
And don’t forget to mark your calendars for the total solar eclipse that 13 states will experience on April 8 a celestial spectacle not to be missed. Oh and by the way that happens to be national empanada day!
As we immerse ourselves in the myriad wonders of April, let’s revel in the magic of this enchanting month, embracing its history, traditions, and festivities with joyous abandon.
